How Does Low Level Laser Therapy Work?

Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) has demonstrated the ability to significantly accelerate and enhance the body’s natural defense and repair mechanisms in the presence of injury, sports and workout injuries, inflammation and with certain disease processes. LLLT is consistent in providing pain relief, reducing injury damage, loss of function and in facilitating a more rapid repair of damaged tissues creating stronger healed tissue structures.

It does this through the action of photo-stimulation of specific wavelengths affecting the light reactive biological cell receptors (chromophores) in the body.

This modifies the effects of injured tissue and reduces the overall duration of inflammation, while enhancing your body’s specific repair and healing mechanisms. This in turn reduces pain, spams and increases natural range of motion and flexibility of the injured area(s).

Multiple Clinical Studies Have Noted The Following Results of LLLT:

  • Increased collagen production
  • Increased vasodilation
  • Increased cell metabolism
  • Increased cell membrane potential
  • Increased microcirculation
  • Increased lymphatic response
  • Enhanced nerve regeneration
  • Reduced inflammatory duration
  • Increased pain threshold
  • Reduced edema magnitude
  • Increased tissue and bone repair
  • Increasedenzyme response

Depth of Tissue Penetration

Some 30+ years of scientific study and clinical research has provided us with detailed information on the reaction of biologic organelles (cell structures) to laser light. It has also shown us which wavelengths penetrate most deeply and what energy levels effect biological processes in the most desirable manner. We need to fully understand the relationship between the depth (from the skin surface) of the target tissue and the ability of the therapeutic laser light to reach that tissue.

The light from the laser distributes in the tissue in the shape of a ball or an egg . This is dependent on the wavelength of the light. Short wavelengths give a smaller and fairly round ball-shaped distribution, while longer wavelengths give a more eggshaped distribution. The shorter 632 nm visible red wavelength is more readily absorbed by blood and skin surface components, thereby limiting its tissue penetration.

The longer 830nm invisible infrared wavelength is not as readily absorbed therefore it has significantly greater depth of penetration. A greater amount of photons are delivered to the target tissue with the 830nm wavelength.

There is now ample clinical evidence that in contrast to other wavelengths, the 830 nm laser light produces specific beneficial biological reactions that are not produced by other wavelengths. This unique ability to stimulate greater response is the key to 830nm laser therapy.

What Makes The Difference In Successful Treatment with LLLT?

The answer to this question is essentially one of penetration and delivered energy. In the treatment of soft and connective tissue injuries and disorders, the goal is to deliver the most effective laser wavelength to the target tissue.

Success Is In The Photon

One of the major contributors to the effectiveness of low level laser therapy is the exchange of energy from light photons to the biological receptor.

In order to achieve any therapeutically significant response, there has to be sufficient photons delivered to the target tissue.

The availability of photons for stimulation is a function of both the appropriate wavelength and device power output.

These two factors determine the amount of photons reaching the desired location.

In treating conditions of greater than 1 cm in depth from the skin surface, the combination of the 830nm wavelength with a 30mW output produces the optimum photon beam.

Devices using other wavelengths and the very low 5-10 mW output lack the capability to supply adequate photon energy to deep tissue conditions.

Stimulates Increased ATP Production

Laser therapy has been used by leading scientists and clinicians around the world for over 20 years. In Japan, where laser therapy is considered a preferred medical practice, Dr. Noriko Mochizuki et al published a clinical study on the effect of laser therapy and ATP production.

In that study, the scientists found that tissue levels of ATP were significantly increased when the target area was irradiated with 830nm wavelength laser light. The study further stated that this beneficial increase in ATP production was not the result of temperature modification, but rather a direct response to the effect of laser light photons.

This study also showed that while 830 nm wavelength laser light stimulated ATP increases, laser light at 632nm had no stimulatory effect on ATP production.

This study along with a host of other clinical reports confirm the singular ability of the 830nm laser wavelength to stimulate cellular responses that result in accelerated metabolism and repair.

Since ATP functions as the primary fuel for cellular activity, stimulated increases of this energy source greatly enhances cellular ability to perform and complete biological processes.

Cold Laser Results in Increased Endorphins

Clinical studies done by Dr. Laakso et al from Royal Brisbane Hospital in Australia have confirmed that significant increases in plasma levels of endorphins resulted from 830nm laser irradiation. This same study showed that low dose diation do not result in significant increases in endorphin levels.

It is also important to note that this study confirmed that the 30mW power output provides better results than the low power, 5-10 mW units in endorphin stimulation.

The ability of the 830nm wavelength to stimulate the production of pain reducing plasma endorphin levels, while other wavelengths did not, is important when clinicians are treating painful conditions.

I would highly recommend the Disc Centers of America in Winter Park. First, my husband went there on crutches and walked out with no crutches after completing his recommended sessions. After my... husbands friend went through physical therapy with not much change, he went to my husbands Doctor. He loves coming back to the Disc Center for his decompression because he is playing golf again. After watching people come in to the office and seeing the transformation they went through, while I was waiting for my husband, I felt very confident they could take care of my back problems. Sure enough they did X-rays the day I went in and they recommended a mri to show exactly what was happening on my spine. The mri was expedited so I could keep my appointment today. The people there are so nice, knowledgeable and willing to personally see you through the pain you have until you receive what your body needs to be pain free. If you are thinking about decompression, my husband, his friend and I would highly recommend you go see them.read more

After many frustrated attempts to treat my low back pain, I arrived at this location in March 2023. Before my consultation, on the phone, Audrey was already concerned about my pain and recommended... that I put ice.Once I arrived there, Kay registered all my medical history. Dr. Roffler, who is deeply knowledgeable in my problem, tried to understand the patterns of my pain and listened to me attentively. After the RX, which is in the office, he ordered an MRI. Audrey, from the front desk, very attentive, promptly scheduled the MRI and took care to accommodate me in a place that assists patients with claustrophobia. The best MRI clinic I've been to today. With my result ready, a herniated disc and a bulging disc were identified by Dr. Roffler, who laid out a treatment plan.Since then, I've followed my treatment with decompressions, ice, supplements and a support belt. Today, 4 months later, my recovery is already 80% better. Every time I needed to report something different that I noticed in my back, I was always promptly attended. This is not the kind of place where you suffer frivolous medical invalidation or minimization of your pain. This is not any mechanized clinic where you are just a number. Even though they have a lot of patients, they treat you as family. Everything is carefully investigated. My pain that radiated to the leg and prevented me from walking no longer occurs and I am able to exercise. Moreover, everything is recorded, documented and carefully evaluated by a team of extremely competent women who work in a very organized way. Among the various tasks they perform, Audrey and Shirley take care of their schedule and all administrative matters. Kay carefully records every improvement you have beyond your back pain history, and Angie is the professional who accomodate us on the machine, know our protocol and even offers us a blanket. All are kind, loving, proactive. In addition to the long hours of work during the week, they spend long hours in advanced training on the weekends. In conclusion, this place goes far beyond ethics and professional competence. Disc Centers os America is truly committed to healing. As person that already was submitted to a back surgery because this treatment was not available in my country, I am very grateful. Thank you for everything.read more

As a physician I am critical of other professionals and wary of chiropractors. There has been an inconsistency in the past in training and services.I have waited to write this until I have had... significant experience. Now that I have observed Dr. Roffler and his staff for over 2 months, it is evident that he is a unique, skilled, and compassionate specialist. His initial assessment determined if treatment or additional studies are required. He has standard chiropractic techniques in addition to the Disc decompression technology. This seems to be exactly as advertised. Some of the other patients were sent by surgeons in an attempt to delay or prevent the need for an operation. Either way, an opinion from Dr. Roffler will be enlightening.read more
